Please understand, she is not stupid. She just never used those facilities. She will get right with the things as well as the language. Russians do not need English or any other foreign language in their daily life. During the Soviet time learning a foreign language was considered as needless and even harmful. Russians received a chance to watch English speaking TV channels just a few years ago, and it's accessible only through cable TV, which is quite expensive.
I studied English in Russia for a long time, and foreigners usually said that my English was very good. Nevertheless, when I arrived here I could not understand people's speech.
