One thing that he told me was, Trust your lady friend. Let her do everything. Give her your money (a little at a time) and let her negotiate everything for you both, from taxi drivers to restaurants to hotels. Sit back and relax. She will take care of you.
He was 100% right!
My first encounter was after Nadia and I met in the airport. A customs official recognized that I was an American Tourist.
He asked me politely if I needed help with my baggage. He got someone to help me wheel my bags out to one of many taxis. He wanted one US dollar.
My Russian fianc argued (negotiated) with him. She thought that that was outrageous, even though I was ready to hand him the buck.
Then the taxi driver wanted $5 US to take me to my bachelor pad which Nadia had already reserved for me. She ended up paying him $2.50 in local currency after much debate.
She told me later that those were outrageous charges. She said that she always had to work hard for her money and that these guys do not work hard and only want to charge me more because I am American.
For example a taxi ride within one half of the city was 50 cents to locals in their money, or $1.50 from one end of the city to the other, about a half hour ride.
If they suspected that I was American, they wanted 5 times that. After a few instances, I learned to keep my English speaking mouth shut, at least until after Nadia negotiated the price.
Would you rather spend only $400 a month to live over there or $100 a day in an expensive hotel?
